So how is what I am about to tell you any different from all those other advertisements?  Well, you will easily be able to tell for yourself.  A new background check company called BeenVerified.com has launched a very innovative approach to online background checks.  They provide a very easy-to-use interface and the results are posted instantly.  They operate on an unlimited background check model meaning they are a subscription based service which allows you full access to their entire search capabilities for a set monthly fee.  So how is this free? Well, they offer a 7 day trial of their service for free.  This week-long trial is the only way you can currently run a background check for free. And, as the offer lasts for a full 7 days, you can run as many background checks as you want so it is really an amazing opportunity!!!

I personally signed up for the free trial and was very impressed with what they have to offer.  First of all, their interface is unlike any I have worked with.  It is very graphical and easy to use and understand.  I also love the fact that your results are instantly available (I waited around a minute for the results to post on average).  I was literally able to run as many background checks as I wanted any time of the day or night.  They also have some great features that allow you to monitor people for changes to their background checks.  A list of the background checks you have run is maintained so you can easily go back through the results you have already accessed.

How is the quality of the data?

One of the biggest complaints I hear about background checks is that there are mistakes in the data.  This goes for all of the low-cost online background checks.  This is due to the fact that the information these sites access ultimately originates from thousands of sources and some data entry errors will occur.  There also is always the risk that data will be crossed between two users with the same name, from the same town.  BeenVerified.com’s data is comparable to most other online background check sites.  In my testing, there certainly were some mistakes but, for the most part, the data was accurate.  I really liked they way they specifically handled criminal history data.  They list the results in three categories: Likely Matches, Possible Matches and Unlikely Matches.  Likely matches are criminal records with the exact same name and date of birth as the user you are searching on.  Possible matches may only have a matching name or variation of the name with the same date of birth.  Unlikely matches would include same name but different or missing date of birth.  This allows you to personally assess how accurate you feel the data is.  The great thing about a free trial is that, if you are not happy with the results, you can just cancel without any cost.  With any other site, you will pay regardless of whether or not the results are satisfactory or not.

How does the free trial work?

So here is how the free trial works.  You go to the BeenVerified.com site and enter the name of the person on whom you wish to run a free background check.  A list of possible matches will be displayed with identifying information so you know you have the correct person.  Then you will be given the option to “View Details Free” which, if you click the button will bring up a form to create an account.  In order to sign up for the trial, they will ask you to enter a valid credit card.  That does not mean it is not free!  This is a necessary step as they must ensure you are at least a potential customer.  They do not bill your card for anything during the trial though you may see a $2.00 charge that is then reversed.  This charge is a way for them to make sure your credit card is valid.  No actual charges are made unless you decide to continue with the service in which case you will start being billed after the trial period has expired.  After your account is verified, you can login and begin searching away.  Please note that, if you do not want to be billed for this product, you must make sure to cancel your subscription prior to the end of the 7 day period.  They have a toll free phone number (1-866-956-6279) to help you in processing your cancellation or to help you with any questions about the product.  They will even help you with a search if you are having trouble.

Conclusion.

I realize that, in the end this is not a truly free product.  But, through the generous free trial program they offer, it at least provides you a way to perform a free background check whereas with other sites that is not a possibility at all.  If free is all that matters then this is really the only option available at this time.

One of the most impressive testimonials to the power of ussearch.com came from CBS News 60 minutes.  In August of 2007, 60 Minutes ran a segment called, “Lost and Found” which documented the need to find relatives for children in the foster care system.  They focused on a 13 year old girl who had been in foster care her whole life.  The state considered this young girl to be a “cold case” due to their inability to find any blood relatives.  60 Minutes accessed ussearch.com and, starting with only the birth mothers first and last name, age and a city they think she lived in, they were able to find over 40 relatives in less than 2 hours.  You can read the full article and watch the 60 Minutes segment here.

My personal experience with them has been impressive.  They were kind enough to provide me with a sampling of each of the different types of default searches they provide.  These are People Search, Reverse Phone Lookup, Email Search, Social Network Search, Property Records, Criminal Records and Background check.  When testing I always run reports on the same set of individuals so as to best compare the experience and results with other providers.  In every instance, ussearch.com outperformed their competitors.  I can honestly say that theirs is the most user-friendly service I have yet encountered.  Their website is very simple unlike others that have so much content it can be difficult to figure out how to do anything.

Anytime you are dealing with a subscription based service, there needs to be a clearly defined way out for the consumer.  If not, many customers will end up getting billed even while trying to figure out how to cancel.  That is not in keeping with the spirit of honest consumerism!  We therefore do not currently recommend Inteligator to anyone unless they clearly understand that this is a service in which you are enrolled meaning you will be billed every month for the contracted fee.  This billing will continue indefinitely until you cancel your subscription. Please refer to our previous article, “How To Cancel Your Inteligator Membership“ for those exact steps which we gleaned from Inteligator.com’s own Terms page.

We clearly want to state that, despite the obvious confusion surrounding the cancellation process, every Inteligator customer that we have communicated with has succeeded in getting their account cancelled and any money refunded that was billed to them while they were trying to figure out the required procedure.  We have not heard of any substantiated claim where Inteligator has failed to refund money in such a case.  If this has happened to you please comment on this article or send us an email at admin@completereviews.net as we would very much like to hear from you!

A word on the Inteligator product itself.  In our personal experience, has been a decent product.  We were able to find a lot of good information on our test subjects.  There were some data errors in some of the searches but no more than we have seen in comparable sites.  All background check sites can have data errors as they rely completely on the end-source for the information they are reporting which can be a small court system in Wyoming.  We also liked their interface which we felt was easy to use. 

There is also one other complaint we are hearing;  that people are being required to pay extra for certain information.  This comes as a surprise when they thought they had paid for an “unlimited” search product.  We researched this and according to Inteligator, the Unlimited Access is to a limited sub-set of information.  Some of their customers have complained that this violates the spirit of the product they were sold.  We looked at Inteligator’s Terms page, and in our opinion a scenario where a customer would need to pay extra for certain information is not clearly defined.  They basically state that a subscriber is given, “unlimited and full access to search results and reports for all searches available in the InteliGator Advanced Member’s Area”.  It goes on to list all the types of reports that are included in the Advanced Member’s Area and the list is fairly extensive.   No where do we see any indication that some of your searches may take you to reports not covered by this advanced area but apparently that must be the case.  We feel that Inteligator needs to clarify this for their customers in advance of them making a purchase so there is no confusion on what the term “Unlimited” means to both parties.

We will be communicating these points to Inteligator and hope it helps improve their product to a point where we can feel comfortable again recommending them to our readers.  For now, we recommend you really read the Terms provided by Inteligator before you decide if this is the right product for you.

As for the cancellation procedure itself, this has changed several times over the last couple years so you should be sure to visit Inteligator’s “Terms or Service Agreement” page  in order to make sure you have the most accurate information.  Following is some pertinent information from that page:

 Payment of fees for purchases of InteliGator services must be made with either a valid credit or debit card (Payment Information). You may choose to purchase a 3, 4, 7 or 14 day trial to InteliGator’s Basic or Advanced membership. If you decide to cancel within the trial period, you will only be

It may sound difficult but it is honestly about the easiest thing you can do on the internet. First of all, here is how these businesses work… The background check companies first gather tons of public data (most of it they must pay huge fees to access) like cell phone records, criminal records, court records, marriage records, etc. Then they build search interfaces (web sites) that allow users (you and me) to be able to easily search through the billions of records they have made available.

Here is the basic process for conducting a successful online background check:

1. Gather some basic information about your partner or perspective partner such as first and last name, cell phone number or address.  I say “or” because you can conduct a successful search with only some of this information.
